Actually all the grandiose paradigms about telecom
versus datacom are worthless when analyzing telcos
right now. There is only one variable that counts
and it's debt and cost of capital. The worst positioned
companies are all the European incumbents (DT, FT, BT)
who paid way too much for their 3G licenses, US long
distance carriers like T (and to a much lesser extent
WCOM and FON) and all CLECS. The best positioned are
the ``copper reliant'' Baby Bells (including Q) that
still have very strong balance sheets, and the likes of
VOD, LVLT and GX. The only pattern I can see is who
is leveraged and who isn't. Independently of who
is copper based and who is fiber based, the survivors
will be able to pick up the assets and wireless licenses
of the losers for pennies on the dollar.
