Population and Resources Worksheet:

Compute acres of land per person for the year 1000 AD and compare with figures
through history and to those projected for the years 2000 and 2020.

1. On a piece of graph paper, graph population growth for each of the years listed to
the right. Label the x-axis "YEAR" and label
the y-axis "NUMBER OF PEOPLE (in billions)."

2. Using a second piece of graph paper, graph the land per capita for each of
those same years. Label the x-axis "YEAR" and label the
y-axis "ACRES PER PERSON."

How did the population change between
1300 and 1500? How do you explain this change? [See Timeline.]

3. What change do you observe from 1800 to the present? What events in
history might have contributed to the change? [See Timeline.]

4. What projections can you make about sustainability and carrying capacity if the world's
population continues to grow at its present rate?

Year .Billions of People .Acres/Person

1000 0.3

1100 0.4

1200 0.4

1300 0.4

1400 0.2

1500 0.4

1600 0.5

1700 0.7

1800 1.0

1900 1.6

2000 6.1

2020 7.6

Note: Divide population into 34 billion acres of land.
