Tony, yes, all true. That is why Dell trails in servers, save for the el-cheapos. They may be surprised to find a market they cannot beat up on with price cuts.
Still a friend of mine (www.directplacement.com) bought Dell and seems quite happy. It is also quite possible that he lacks the comparison base and just responded to sticker shock when he looked at dell versus CPQ. Few CPQ sites buy extra Dell servers, it seems to be mainly smaller buyers.
Of course Dell can be hard at work at what CPQ has on the shelf as we speak, no lead is permanent.

As for the move to direct mode and just using the PCs as placekeepers.....doomed, as dell will use that market where they make $$ and CPQ loses $$ to advance into other areas where CPQ thinks it cannot be assailed. CPQ has to see that it is under a broad attack by Dell. Reminds me of the salami game, 1 slice is not worth a fight over, soon all that is left is the butt end and that is not worth fighting over either.
CPQ needs to get smart or 5 years from now a butt end will be all that is left of CPQ.
