Oh, I've known that for some time, which is why I invested so heavily in Oracle. However, the issue is trying to actually get people to use local sites, and to find a way to monetize them.
Unfortunately, while they may be with us for some time, local sites don't tend to make anything for those who manage them - even when people use them. In many cases, newspapers tend to use them as "added value" to advertising in the newspaper. As any media person will tell you, added value is nice, but doesn't pay the bills. You can't even extract premiums for it on a regular basis.
My "shock" was really a statement on the fact that people use the local sites, since they don't tend to get alot of traffic (despite, or perhaps because of, their proliferation). OTOH, I shouldn't be surprised that people on SI know, or use, them. We are a little closer to the bleeding edge. |
