PC Sales in Japan Register First Increase in Three Weeks
February 19, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Sales of PCs in Japan in the fourth week of January (Jan. 22-28, 2001) increased for the first time in three weeks.

As NEC Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. introduced spring PC models, a variety of new models are appearing on the market.

According to GfK Japan Ltd., an information company dealing with POS data collected from 3,200 volume retailers of household electric appliances, sales of PCs in the fourth week of January 2001 rose 14.8 percent in volume and by 17.8 percent in value from the previous week.

Compared with the same week last year (Jan. 24-30, 2000), the total sales increased 13.1 percent in volume and 4.5 percent in value. The average retail price of PCs increased 4,628 yen to 182,224 yen, from 177,596 yen the previous week. (116.12 yen = US$1)

Sales of notebook PCs have been maintaining a 20 percent increase in units over the previous year since the second week of January.

However, sales of desktop PCs in units increased only by 0.9 percent over the previous year, which means slight growth. Average retail prices of both desktop PCs and notebook PCs increased from the previous week by 3,000-4,000 yen to recover to the levels recorded in late 2000. The retail price of desktop PCs has been decreasing from last year's level for three consecutive weeks.
