It had been pointed out a number of years ago that, if the automobile had improved at the rate of the computer, it would go a million miles per hour, you would get a million miles per gallon, an it would cost $.02 to buy. [The figures are no doubt considerably better today.]
Based on this rate of change, it is no surprise that consumers have wanted a new computer almost as soon as they buy the last one.
As you probably know, some changes are coming in that will somewhat mitigate this - e.g., improvements in interconnects [e.g., firewire], Intel's new processor modules and other modularity improvements - which should make upgrades easier and effective for a longer time period. But the basic desire to get major new capabilities will still remain. If this is what you consider to be a "disposable PC", then your wish may be granted.
