Aside from the monsterous idiocy of Monsanto and some of the other big players in their public relations efforts (Frankenfoods is the way a lot of folks think of bio-designer foods), I believe that the future is bright for the industry.

Some early missteps like the frost tolerant tomato that disappeared, the scandal surrounding Starlink, and other faux pax seem to be growing pains. I see genetic modifications being inevitable. Though I clearly am concerned about the potential for abuse by corporate interests.

One of the really interesting developments in rice cultivation is the possibility to add a gene for the production of beta carotene in the rice kernel. This solves a nutritional deficiency that is pervasive in the third world. Unfortunately, the biggest stumbling block to this advance in nutrition is the attitude of populations who "think" rice should be white and take offense at the orange cast of the modified grain. An educational program is under way, but it could be a long time until the consumer gets over ancient biases and accepts the something can be "new and improved".
