The 2nd amendment is one cryptic sentence, and certain groups choose to religiously ignore the "well regulated militia" clause, throwing out half the words right from the start.

The clause about the "well regulated militia" does not say anything about limiting the rights to the members of the
militia. The amendment says rather that the "right of the people" shall not be infringed. The clause is rhetoric in
support of the active clause of the amendment. It doesn't set out any rules or limitations. It does not mandate or
forbid anything. It just states an opinion that the militia is necessary. It doesn't go in to any details about the militia
beyond a preference that it be well regulated.

Even this controversy is to an extent irrelevant because even if the right was limited to the militia, by law able bodied adult male non criminals are members of the militia. I say "to an extent irrelevant" rather then just irrelevant" because congress could change the militia law a lot easier then the 2nd amendment could be repealed.
