The point is that it seems the concealed carry laws and the "some level of deterrence" make it safer then "it always has been."

We must have very different senses of how safe "it's always been." I remember when people didn't lock their homes or their cars and you could get away with leaving your keys in the ignition, although everyone knew that was inviting trouble. I remember when hooligans fought with chains and knives.

I don't presume to know the answer to this gun problem. It's a knotty one. With any problem, however, mindset is important and this mindless reverence of guns by non-criminals has to be part of the problem.
