He chose to escalate cos he knew he would get a reaction. He is winning allies from the West in the form of the NATO countries that have questioned the recent bombing, and in the form of his Arab brothers, who always unite in words against Israel.

The US/UK are present over Iraq at the request of Kuwait and Saudi, who foot a large bill to cover the "expenses". The contract allows "us" to take whatever action "we" see fit.

Of course, we could decline to provide the assistance that the threatened Arab countries have requested, then perhaps we could see Saddam's armies attacking Kuwait and Israel again.

Having taken the potshot at Bush, and saying he "isn't all that clever" would you tell us what you would have preferred him to have done in response to the onslaught of surface to air attacks on planes patrolling the no fly zones?
