Most of the Montezuma's revenge is caused by E.coli bacteria. There are many strains of E.coli and not all cause illness.

I heard of a couple getting a Montezuma's revenge like illness from a protozoan called Giardia that they traced back to their hotel swimming pool. ( One of the pair was a microbiologist ).
