Bosquedog and mr. mark, thanks SO much for your advice. Adventurous day. Bosque, first I downloaded the program at the link you sent me to, enditall, but got the message that I couldn't open it without downloading another program called Netzip Classic (a freebie; though there was another one available for 29.95), which I did; but though I have that now on my computer, showing in my tool tray, and maybe it'll still come in handy at some point, it was still unable to open enditall. A mystery.
So I went to mr. mark's ctrl+alt+del removal-of-background-applications idea. I didn't do that first because I had already closed down everything in my tool tray, including all NSW, so thought that was enough.
So I followed your instructions, mr. mark, removing everything except Explorer. You said also not to remove "symtray," by there was no symtray. There was a "systray," so I left that.
By this time, the scary red defragmentation figure was 63%.
I tried defragging for a while that way. It wasn't right, so I removed "systray," and Explorer disappeared, too.
I set it up to defrag again. This time, it got up to 58% complete, but that took several hours, and it wasn't going any further.
I got the idea of disconnecting the Optimum Online cable modem, which is not working (tech guy coming to find out why tomorrow) but was blinking green lights. And going through the ctrl+alt+del routine again.
And it was defragged in an hour.
Whew.
I almost paid a guy who charges $120. for the first hour and 95. for each add'l to come over here, and probably would have except I was ashamed of the disaster area that is my house and couldn't deal with having a computer problem and cleaning the damn house all at the same time.
THANK YOU!
I'll be back soon with another question. |
