More firms than expected give up investments in IMT-2000 projects

The number of companies deciding not to invest, after all, in the W-CDMA (wide code
division multiple access) mode IMT-2000 business exceeded expectations, an official
of the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) said yesterday.

The official said that Korea Telecom and SK Telecom recently reported investments
made by their consortium partners to the FSS. According to the reports, forfeited shares
in KT consortium reached 8 percent and those in SKT consortium came to 4 percent.

These percentages are much higher than the 3 or 4 percent that they initially expected,
and it could open KT and SKT to criticism that their consortiums are much different from
those they advertised when they were given the licenses for the business.

KT decided to allocate the forfeited share to companies wanting them while SKT plans
to take over the entire volume to strengthen its control over the consortium.

Most companies who bowed out of the futuristic telecom business, cited funding
problems as the reason. But experts pointed out that the companies seem to have lost
their appetite for the business, which is expected to turn out profits only after 2005.
