Sun Targets Core Network Infrastructure With New Carrier-Grade Compact PCI Systems
New Servers and Board-Level Products Help Enable Developers to Deploy Solaris and ChorusOS Applications Deeper Into the Core Network
CANNES, France, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- At the GSM World Congress, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) introduced five new carrier-grade products to help network equipment providers (NEPs) leverage the Solaris(TM) Operating Environment and Chorus(TM) Operating System deeper into the expanding IP-intensive core network. Today, Sun unveiled the Netra(TM) ct 400 and 800 CompactPCI (cPCI) servers, and the Netra CP2040, CP2060 and CP2080 cPCI board-level products. These cPCI carrier-grade server systems and boards are based on open, industry standards helping enable rapid deployment of network infrastructure to support the growing demand for fast-to-market telecom and Internet products and services. These new products provide NEPs and carriers flexible choices and solutions designed to deliver continuous uptime for their customers.
``With its carrier-grade hardware and software technologies, third-party relationships and OEM services, Sun provides a complete integrated Internet computing solution to provide network equipment providers with a reliable and scalable compute platform to build out next generation network equipment,'' said John McFarlane, executive vice president, Network Service Provider Group, Sun Microsystems, Inc. ``With these new cPCI system products, along with our scalable Sun servers and software, we are providing NEPs with the flexibility and time-to-market advantage for the delivery of third-generation wireless systems.''
Standards-Based, Flexible, Carrier-Grade Servers
The new NEBS-certified Netra ct 400 and 800 cPCI systems are designed for quick deployment and serviceability required by carriers and NEPs building IP-based next-generation communications infrastructure. Built for reliability and flexibility, the Netra ct server give NEPs a standards-based cPCI system to deploy IP intensive Solaris and Chorus solutions tailored for carrier-class systems.
Built on the foundation of Sun's UltraSPARC(TM) processors and the Solaris Operating Environment or Chorus real-time operating system, the Netra ct 400 and 800 servers working in tandem with the Netra cPCI boards inside the server utilize common APIs and high-availability extensions. This combination of integrated components represents a powerful platform that is able to use the complete high availability capabilities of Sun's cPCI servers, boards, and operating systems scaling from real-time intensive switching applications to IP intensive computing with full hot swap support.
``Sun's Netra ct servers are helping us create a next-generation, global platform for the mobile Internet,'' said Cindy Christy, chief operating officer of Lucent's wireless networks group. ``The Internet has created a demand for highly-available, flexible solutions for the wireless industry, and Lucent is delivering this next-generation-ready platform to make the Internet mobile.''
The Netra ct systems are ideal carrier-grade platforms for base station controllers and radio network controllers, softswitches, multimedia over IP gateways, remote access, SS7 gateways, and signaling transfer points. The modularity of the Netra ct 400 and 800 cPCI servers help NEPs to build systems to match application requirements and provides a server upgrade path for future expandability. The front accessibility of FRUs, the quick-access chassis ``drawer'' concept, and hot-swap capabilities also help ensure excellent serviceability. In addition, the adherence to industry standards provides an open platform ideal for telecom provides that need to grow their services and infrastructure. The Netra ct 400 server allows NEPs to have a compact footprint to deploy applications and allows up to four independent servers in a 12U space. The Netra ct 800 I/O server allows up to to six I/O slots per server, redundant power capabilities and allows up to two independent servers in a 12U space.
Opportunities for Third Parties and Developers
Today, Sun introduces the Solaris Ready for Netra program -- a certification and branding program for third party products developed for the family of Netra boards and systems to accelerate solutions for customers. Solaris Ready products are certified and tested in Sun laboratories to meet specific requirements and are verified to work with Sun(TM) platforms. Sun is working with industry-leading vendors to provide a comprehensive open platform to build new telecommunications solutions for the core network. Aculab, Blue Wave Systems, Brooktrout, Interphase, LSI Logic,Natural MicroSystems, Performance Technology, SBE, Ulticom, and Znyx Networks are planning to work on Solaris Ready certified telecommunications products and technology to complement Sun's new Netra ct 400 and 800 cPCI systems.
