2/19/01 - NORTEL NETWORKS: Nortel Networks extends long haul
DWDM market lead in North America, RHK says Nearly doubles
market share, strengthening leadership position in optical Internet

Feb 19, 2001 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Nortel Networks has substantially
increased its lead in the North American long haul DWDM market with a 61.4
percent share as of year-end 2000, nearly double its 37.1 percent share one
year earlier.

These estimates are from a new optical market study recently released by RHK,
a leading telecommunications research firm.

The study also ranks Nortel Networks #1 in the North American metropolitan
DWDM and SONET market, and is consistent with similar reports recently
published by IDC and the Dell'Oro Group. "Nortel Networks continues to take
market share, outpace competitors and exceed industry growth in the strategic
optical networking market," said Greg Mumford, president, Optical Internet,
Nortel Networks. "No other company is as well positioned as Nortel Networks in
today's market. Our all-photonic, IP (Internet Protocol)-based strategy
represents the future - a new, high-performance Internet significantly more
powerful than that we know today."

Optical technology is enabling explosive advancements in communications,
creating opportunities on an unprecedented scale for vendors, Wall Street and
private investors alike, according to RHK. Although the RHK report covers only
North America, Nortel Networks is also showing significant momentum in Asia and
Europe, applying its optical networking expertise to a broadening global market.
Last week, China Telecom awarded Nortel Networks the largest single optical
contract ever in China.

Web Releases are intended to provide customers, shareholders and employees
