I find it strange that people wouldn't offer the compassion they'd offer a
dying animal.


I've always been amazed by that. Although some people can be amazingly cruel to some animals, our societal ethical standard requires that we not let a companion animal suffer. Would that we were so kind to humans.

I have a friend who once had a cat go into seizures in the laundry room. She didn't know what to do so she closed the door and went to the other side of the house to try not to hear the animal's cries and banging around. It eventually died. Years later she cried from guilt as she told me the story. She never got over it.
