TI Unveils Single-Chip Direct Conversion Radio Frequency Solution for GSM-, GPRS- and UMTS-Based Wireless Standards
Highly Integrated, Multi-Band Device Reduces Wireless Handset Component Costs by 1/3 and Shrinks Board Size by More than 15 percent
DALLAS (Feb. 5, 2001) -- Extending its portfolio of wireless solutions for 2.5 and 3G wireless handsets and advanced mobile computing devices, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN) today unveiled a single-chip direct conversion radio frequency (RF) solution for the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), General Packet Radio System (GPRS) and Global System for Mobile (GSM)-based wireless telephone handsets. TI's new highly integrated RF solution will enable wireless handset original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to build smaller systems with fewer components at a lower cost than competing solutions.
The new TRF6150 direct-conversion RF device reduces the overall RF bill of materials (BOM) by 15 percent over other announced direct-conversion devices, and by 30 percent over solutions currently in production. The device also enables a 15 percent reduction in required board space. At the same time, the TRF6150 provides enhanced functionality over competing devices and has demonstrated signal quality better or equivalent to today's RF solutions. ....snip

Looks like ADI has more head to head with TXN. What I would like to see is the CDMA supported Othello chip set. 3G systems are going to be based on some form of CDMA technology and getting Othello products out there for evaluation and testing should be a top priority for ADI.
