Agreed... an economic downturn is not the time to try to go for the throat of your competitor... no matter what the relative size of the players is...

A drop in retail sales will hurt both AMD and Intel, although percentage-wise, retail makes up a bigger part of AMD's pie.

I think it will be very interesting to see the quarterly reports for both companies... Intel's Q4 guidance was fairly vague with the -15% +/- lots of points because of uncertainly in the economy. AMD's Q4 guidance was far more optimistic... They expect to sell between 6 and 6.5 MU in Q1 2001... they were also projecting "no better than flat" quarter to quarter growth.

Looks like its going to be a tough year all around for the tech stocks... of course, with the collapse of the dot com's, this really shouldn't come as a major surprise to anyone...
