Was the last time the US had stagflation in the late 70's? (76 to 78 and 80 to 82?)

Presuming those numbers are correct... Carter's administration I think left it up to the Fed to manage... with rather disastrous results...

Reagan's administration boosted the economy with deficit spending... throughout the 80's...

The question that Bush has to answer is will there be more benefit to deferring paying down the debt (and freeing up federal funds for tax cuts and/or programs) or keeping the debt at its current relatively high level and cutting taxes now???

I for one am going to pay down as much debt as possible and hope for the best... :)
