I wasn't being cavalier (I hope it wasn't perceived that way). I truly think these issues are complicated and, like abortion, euthanasia should have its place in the light of day. Highly regulated and controlled, but legal.

It is always a matter of degree. I disagree with Greg about Kevorkian. I've heard him talk - he is simply making sure that people don't do it wrong. I don't think it is right to characterize him as a psychotic serial killer. He is a pathologist. He isn't Mr. Personality, but I don't feel he is doing it to get a thrill.

I hope I'm never in the position a friend was in. His dad was diabetic, a multiple amputee, and suffering from advanced brain cancer. His mother would latch on to everything the doctor would say and turn it into a "hope". She was a simple woman and when the doctor said, "We can help him live another month if we intubate him." she would interpret that as "he might get better".

The man's veins were in such bad shape that it took 20-30 minutes to find a vein and they'd still not be able to get the drip rate up to get him hydrated. He started dehydrating and his tounge and inner mouth was cracked. His kidneys were failing and he just simply wasn't long for the earth. The cancer was eating his brain and the person who my friend had known as his father was long, long since departed. His mother refused to take him off life support.

That is certainly not an enviable way to go. No, I don't like the way God chose for his dad. A really bad choice, IMO.
