The Greenwich Meridian is the zero point. Everything goes east and west from there. Let's say we are standing in Greenwich facing north. Degrees of longitude start at zero and go east one degree at the time and west one degree at a time. So one degree east of Greenwich and one degree west of Greenwich are both positive numbers. If you turn right to go east and I turn left to go west, we will meet halfway around the world at 180 degrees east and 180 degrees west of Greenwich. If we pass each other and walk another mile, we're still going the same direction. Greenwich is closer for me going west and closer for you going east, but our degrees of longitude from the 180 start going down. But you are then counting down in degrees of west longitude and I am counting down in degrees of east longitude. Take a look at your globe, and it will make it easier to understand.

Oh, the bear was WHITE, of course. The only place in the world you can go south a mile, east a mile, and north a mile and end up in the same place is the north pole. Therefore the bear has to be a polar bear. We also have several colors of black bears and some very nasty grizzlies. If you'd like to learn about black bears where I live, check out juneaubears.com You might also enjoy juneauphotos.com.
