Emergency Birth Control Approved
Bill Calls for Access Without Prescription

RICHMOND, Feb. 20 -- The Virginia Senate today joined
the House in voting to allow women to receive emergency
contraceptives from a pharmacist without a doctor's
prescription, a measure hailed by family planning activists
and many abortion foes as a way to reduce unwanted
pregnancies.

The bill, designed to increase women's access to what are
often referred to as morning-after drugs, had broad,
bipartisan support as it passed the Senate on a 25 to 12 vote,
after a 58 to 40 victory in the House earlier this month.
