But it doesn't look as bad as the mid-80's recession, when there were severe fundamental flaws in the structure of US businesses. Back then, the auto industry nearly collapsed this country and had everyone thinking Japan's competitive businesses were going to be the undoing of the USA.

mid-80s recession didn't exist outside the minds of journalists (and pages of their newspapers). There was a lot of much needed restructuring going on, but the economy kept growing.

There were a recessions in early 80s and early 90s.
