When will an analyst say business sucks now, buy based on future results. They say it and will take credit for the move later on but for now their announcements are designed to produce immediate business for the firm on the sell side. It sucks when this happens. In the merrill case, you have 1. retail selling, 2. institutional buying at the bottom, 3. six months out with lets say a 50% gain to 30, the analyst will take credit for todays call(as a buy) and will upgrade the stock.
