These Carriers better figure out quickly how to generate more revenues out of packet based services. It seems all these Carriers were too busy trying to build the additional capacity without spending enough time/money to build new billing/revenue generating model.

To NT's credit, Roth did mention this many times in the past as THE issue for his customers.....he has said many times that the Carriers must reduce their cost and develop a more intelligent (bandwidth/content based billing) way to charge for their data services.

voice revenue is eroding very quickly (although I am seeing this crazy price competition slowing down even now as the incumbents & next gen carriers realize that they can't continue to lower long-distance prices without harming their ability to generate the necessary cashflow to maintain their capital requirements.

Internet is great but it shouldn't be free or a loss-leader. The quicker these ISP's and Carriers realize that, the faster we will have a recovery of the telecom sector. After all no one is going to innovate and invest if the only result is freebie service and bankruptcy! (this problem is somewhat analogous to the pharmaceutical industry where there is a strong patent protection for new drugs in order to stimulate R&D/investment)
