Good question, and one I wish the more experienced/technical experts would answer.. Anyway, my feeble attempt at answering would be that it is closer to switching than transport as the function of the device is over a short period of space and connects to transport equipment. However, I suspect you could put it in the "dumb" switching sub-category (as opposed to the "smart" switching sub-category with CD,) which may be why Ciena is already making sales calls offering the K2 and CoreDirector together (and thereby upgrading it to more "intelligence"-with good reception by customers according to this last CC.)

PS Of course that leads me to something I have thought about-when will the functionality of the K2 be incorporated into the CD if the co-demand is high for both products? One wonders....
