A new pet on the block...

I went to Toys R Us and Kay Bee Toys last night to look for GigaPets. Neither place had them (Toys R Us hadn't heard of them and Kay Bee was supposed to have received a shipment of them three weeks ago). However, both places had new shipments of Tamagotchis in and both places had a new virtual pet, NanoPets from Playmates (look at playmatestoys.com. Nano Pets come in three flavors: dog, cat, and human baby. They are made by Ying Leung International Ltd. of China and distributed by Playmates. They are very similar to Tamagotchis except that they have an extra button (so you can scroll backwards through menus as well as forwards), and a bit more animation for the pets. I bought the NanoPuppy version so I could compare it to Tamagotchis. The dog runs a round a bit and has animations of a fence and what looks like the back door to a house and some stairs behind him. Taking care of him is very similar to taking care of a Tamagotchi. He poops a lot more (and more graphically :-)) He can play two games, the standard guess-which-way-I'm-going-to-turn game, and a chase-the-ball game where the ball drops to one side of the screen and you have to press the button for that side repeatedly to make the dog chase the ball. The instructions say he will live for about a month. The screen is a little easier to read and the buttons are a little easier to press, but there are no significant improvements to this toy over the Tamagotchi. It is priced exactly the same as a Tamagotchi and has almost the same egg-shape. Which toy will kids like better? I suppose each toy will have its fans.

I can't find a stock symbol for Playmates, so I am guessing it is private, like Tiger Electronics. Does anyone know if it's public?
