milo, you overstate the junction temperature headroom of the AMD T-bird compared to the P4. The max junction temperature of the 1.2 GHz Athlon is 95, which means that the CPU package has to be no higher than about 90. The maximum temp of the P4 1.5 GHz CPU package is 72. So the Athlon can get 18 degrees C warmer than the P4 and still meet its spec. 18 degC is very significant. It means a P4 1.5 GHz system needs a heatsink which is over 50% more efficient at removing heat than an Athlon 1.2 GHz system, even after allowing for the slightly higher power dissipation of the 1.2 GHz Athlon.

The low thermal headroom of the P4 is the reason all these systems are anything but sleek and elegant.
