Long-Term Market Peak in Mid 60's:
While I don't claim to understand everything that influences the Stock Market, my working assumption is that demographics are the primary force underlying long term trends. From the mid-20's onward, the immigration adjusted birth rate slid downward. Although pre-1910 data is sketchy, I believe the birth rate rose gradually from 1905 onwards. Thus, during the late 60's, the number of people entering their 40's gradually declined with each passing year, while the number entering their 60's gradually rose. Through some mechanism I don't fully understand, this pattern, in both the U.S. and Japan, correlates with negative long term Market trends.
