SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 2000-- Riverstone Networks was ranked number 1 in carrier-class switching for the Metropolitan Environment by Network World Magazine. The article published yesterday declares that "Riverstone hits all the hot buttons and is a good example of what a carrier-class switch should be."
The article called particular attention to Riverstone's strengths in bandwidth control and provisioning, noting that Riverstone can "slice bandwidth into subscriber-specified increments and then dynamically allocate bandwidth on customer request. This lets service providers service multitenant buildings and campus environments, where multiple subscribers each want a segment of the overall bandwidth provided to a building." The article praised Riverstone's hardware-based accounting (which) characterizes each subscriber's traffic pattern, enabling service providers to track subscriber utilization and predict increasing bandwidth requirements."
The article also recognized the advantages being able to deliver services over any media in the metropolitan environment. "Service providers must be able to accommodate a mixture of existing and emerging media, including legacy copper and fiber." The article stressed that "although fiber to the curb is rapidly growing, it still accounts for only 10% of all building access. The remaining 90% is through copper cable via T-1, T-3 and DS-3 circuits running frame relay, PPP or ATM." The article praised Riverstone Networks' ability to deliver services over very network infrastructure including frame relay, T-1/E-1, DS-3/channelized T-3, ATM OC-3 and OC-12 and Packet over SONET (PoS) OC-3 through OC-48.
"Riverstone Networks is pleased to be recognized by Network World", said Romulus Pereira. "We are 100% focussed on the Metropolitan Area Network. Our products deliver the services that metro area service providers demand -- and we deliver them over a wide variety of interfaces -- not just Gigabit Ethernet, but also SONET/SDH, ATM, T1/E1, T3/E3, Cable -- this enables us to participate in every part of the Metropolitan Area Network."
