Les,

With all due respect, your lead phrase "Qualcomm warned tonight" merits further clarification.

For those who have followed Qualcomm's CDMA technology, Qualcomm was warning about the delay of 3G based on W-CDMA wireless technology, preferred by European operators. To many, W-CDMA is considered a "rival technology" to Qualcomm's CDMA.

The delay of W-CDMA may thus facilitate the adoption of 1xEV, proprietary to Qualcomm and capable of being overlayed to Europe's GSM system. In which case Qualcomm could stand to rake in $$$ until well into 2004. The delay itself could therefore be interpreted as good news for Qualcomm, Motorola, Lucent and many other US companies, but not so great for Nokia and Ericcson - simplistically speaking.

Since you have a large following on SI, I felt compelled to clarify this subtle point. One simply cannot place his/her destiny in the hands of Reuters' writers alone. <g>

Regards,
Ibexx
