Let me clarify. Intel already has Pentium III and will continue carrying the P6 core for several more years because of its small die size, power savings, and good performance, especially on legacy apps. That will be Intel's price/performance processor until Pentium 4 can get there. The hope is by that time, more mainstream software will be optimized for Pentium 4. And along the way, the most performance-critical applications will be optimized first.

I see nothing wrong with this strategy, except for the sheer difficulty in getting the software developers to go along.
