SK Telecom to Invest in HDR Business

February 23, 2001 (SEOUL) -- SK Telecom Co., Ltd. said that it plans to begin an HDR
service, a high-speed wireless data service developed in line with IMT-2000 wireless
phone technology.

Also, the company said it would start making relevant investments this year.
HDR, or CDMA-2000 1X EV-DO (Data Only), is a wireless data transmission
technology developed by Qualcomm Inc., which can process data at a maximum speed
of 2.5Mbps. With the services to expand from data only to data and voice (EV-DV), it
will allow users to make voice calls and also have access to high-speed wireless
Internet services via wireless handsets.
SK Telecom decided to invest in the HDR technology in 2001, but it hasn't pinpointed
the investment amount or the exact period in which investments will be made, an SK
Telecom official said.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm said that it would release a sample chip used in HDR services
during the third quarter of the year, and release a commercial product at year-end.
