You make valid points but trying to catch the bottom at least for me is due to options. Just like they "give away" puts near tops, they give away calls duringthe sharp declines. Trying to buy those as close to a bottom as possible allows you to get them before the premium shifts. Many times just turning the bottom ( or top) makes the option shoot up in value despite the actual price of the underlying barely moving. I can't speak for everyone but that is what I am after. I like to buy the options no one wants before everyone decides to buy them. <gggg>
