Marengi To Leave Novell
(06/05/97; 11 a.m. EDT)
By Shawn Willett, Computer Reseller News

PROVO, UTAH--Novell Inc. President and Chief Operating Officer
Joseph Marengi is expected to step down, said sources close to
the company.

Marengi's planned departure comes after the beleagured networking
company posted a loss of $14.6 million for its second quarter
ended April 30. The company, which is losing share to Microsoft
Corp.'s Windows NT in the small business market, also announced
plans to cut its workforce by 18 percent or approximately 1,000
employees.

Souces said Marengi, an aggressive Novell marketing veteran,
received a lucrative severance package. Marengi and Novell could
not be reached for comment.

Marengi took over as president when Novell CEO Bob Frankenburg
stepped down last August.

In March, Eric Schmidt, former chief technology officer at Sun
Microsystems Inc., was appointed CEO of Novell.Marengi had applied
for the top job, but did not get it.

In a conference call last month after Novell's much worse than
expected results were announced, Schmidt said 30 percent of
Novell's top executives have either left the company, been
terminated or been demoted. "Frankly the management performance
has not been good," he said.

Prior to his appointment as president last year, Marengi served
as executive vice president, worldwide sales and field operations.
Marengi was previously vice president of channel sales.
