I thought this was my point. The key words are "same price."

But price hardly ever factors into "processor-macho" debates. You never see "Alpha/Power4" Rob Young arguing on the basis of price, do you? ;-)

It's easier to get the server software guys to optimize for a particular platform than it is to get mainstream software guys to do the same. This is because server software developers have a smaller, less diverse customer base, so they can more easily custom-tailor their software toward the platforms they will support.

It's the same concept that drives AMD's plans for x86-64 adoption. The server software guys will be the first (they hope) to make the 64-bit migration, not only because they could use the 64-bit addressing, but because it will be easier for them than, say, the guys doing Microsoft Office.
