Tenchusatsu,

But price hardly ever factors into "processor-macho" debates.

It is true. But it becomes a factor when people buy machines (or the small fraction that upgrades their machines).

It's easier to get the server software guys to optimize for a particular platform than it is to get mainstream software guys to do the same. This is because server software developers have a smaller, less diverse customer base, so they can more easily custom-tailor their software toward the platforms they will support.

You may be right about a brand new install of a new server with a yet to be released version of OS and server software.

For existing installations, this would mean the need to upgrade all their server licenses for software to the latest versions (when they are released) You are talking some serious bucks here for both software and thousands of hours of software installation, conversions of various scripts, changes of set up, lost manhours of users.

All this because P4 design team f*cked up, and P4 can't run existing software well?

What I find amusing is that Intel empire was built partly on the fact that Intel kept releasing new processors that ran all the existing software, and ran that software faster. The new strategy is to either not run existing software at all, or run it poorly. I wonder what rocket scientist is in charge. He may be an AMD agent sabotaging Intel.
