There are a variety of incompatible wireless standards. For home users setting up their own wireless LAN : most of the new systems ('WiFi' acronym) you will see are in 2.4 GHz ISM unlicensed band, based on the IEEE 802.11b standard (e.g., the Dell commercial on TV); another is Home RF, which (I think ...) is what Proxima uses (they make the Apple system you may have recently seen advertised). Bluetooth is a signalling protocol for connecting your various devices with your home PC, for swapping/updating shared files.

The Ricochet user must purchase a modem for use in their device; there is an older external modem; also the new Novatel MERLIN PC card modem; and Sierra Wireless just came out with their AirCard which works more like a NIC, 'always on' without needing to log into the network. The latter two are both being designed to work for various PDAs as well as laptops. The radios transmit in the 902-928 MHz band, using protocols that are necessarily unique to the Ricochet network (this is unavoidable, given the polling, signalling, retransmission protocol, etc.).

National Semiconductor is developing a chipset (at their own cost, note... ) which will enable embedding these functions into the laptop/pda w/o need for separate modems.

HTH.
