OT

The assumption that low wages are better than no wages does not take into consideration the fact that many people become, for all intents and purposes, a possession of the factory until their quota is met. Some are chained to tables until their quota is met. And because companies like Nike do not directly employ the workers under contract with the factories they use, Nike assumes no responsibility whatsoever. Calling these actions "business practices" is too kind; reprehensible is more apropos.

I would not support chaining workers to their tables but if nike pulls out the change won't be to a situation where they all work in air conditioned offices for $100k+ a year. The change will be to either work for even less pay under similar or worse conditions or perhaps to starve.

I am all for campaigning against the abuses but I don't think a boycott of countries with low wages helps the workers in those poor country. If you want to continue this discussion perhaps we should take it to PM or to a coffee talk thread. One that I am active on is Subject 50472
There probably are a few people there who would be interested in the topic, or perhaps another thread if you have one in mind. I think there might be some tolerance for a few off topic posts but I think if we continue this conversation we will start to annoy people here who are looking for AMAT information. Its not like this thread is slow even without the OT.
