Vodafone and Ford tie up for Focus

THE INTERNET-ENABLED car for the mass market moved closer today as mobile phones giant Vodafone announced a deal to offer wireless traffic and emergency services communications as an optional extra in the Ford Focus.
The so-called telematics product, which launches in Germany on 1 March before being offered to customers in Britain, will be accessed through the Focus's stereo system.

It will cost about 520 as an optional extra.

The unit will automatically dial the emergency services if the car's airbag is activated, while global positioning will enable the driver to hear local traffic and navigational advice.

Ford, which sold more than 525,000 Focus cars in Europe last year, said the exclusive deal between the two companies would subsequently be expanded to offer more services including stock quotes, weather and messaging.

It said the system had "far wider potential" than products such as Tracker, or navigational units from firms such as Trafficmaster.
