As you know, when many families immigrated to the US, their names were changed by the port of entry masters or clerks because either they didn't understand what the immigrants were saying or they just decided to change their last names for convenience sake. When people change their names they always keep a root name somewhere as did the clerks way back when. If you see a name that phonetically sounds like your name, chances are they might be distant relatives of yours. The practice is still common today with immigrants from India, Pakastain and the like. We've got 3 employees from Pakastain working for us at our computer company. When they came over here, they dropped their last names and used their middle names in their place. They said it's a very common practice because to use their real last names would prove too difficult. The Irish did similiar with their last names by dropping the O and morphing what was left into common names we see today. Remember..... the Irish........ Catholics especially....... were treated with as much distain back then as the Blacks were.

The FBI along with the CIA and it's predecessor the OSS were very adept at this skill. It's only been recently that they have shared some of their knowledge with the general public and most of this had been with other law enforcement agencies. While we abhor government intrusion into our lives, if it weren't for that intrusion, we wouldn't have a smidgen these wonderful documents at our disposal to trace our relations.

Another case of looking on the bright side. :-)
