IMArchitecture has been mentioned in press releases since 1995, albeit buried in the release. I have not heard that it is either dead or unlikely to be released within the next couple years. What Octel is doing with Sierra is merely squeezing every last penny from this technology. This is good business strategy as long as the next generation system is in the wings. I understand your concern with this but Octel would not surrender market share so easily as to put its future in Sierra. My money is on Octel being aware of this and making the required preparations to follow Sierra.

In fact I fully expect Octel to hit the market with news on IMA before the end of the year. It's no longer a question of will they, but more of an imperative. Octel's great strenght is marketing and sales. Marketing requires an intimate understanding of the future needs of consumers. This company does great work beneath the sheets.

The real question is not how does Sierra compare, but how does IMA or its disciple compare? What will the real capabilities be? Ports, openess, handling capacity, upgrade paths, etc. Will its design philosophy mirror Sierra in the ease of add on components?--as the customer grows so does the system. That was one of Sierra's strengths. Octel marketed this platform along these lines and it worked.

Of course it's fascinating that customers for Sierra are still to be found. I'm starting to wonder if Octel has possibly agreed to a cost benefit for any customer taking Sierra as a temporary solution pending IMA'a release. This is purely speculation but these type of agreements are commonplace.

Don't take too much offense at the 15-50 dig. I was merely having some fun.

Greg
