This should be obvious but I feel the need to point out one more thing. The reaction by the investment community to Dr. Jacobs' assertion that W-CDMA will be delayed by at least two years is telling. He has been saying this repeatedly for the last two years at least. Suddenly it is big news. Why? Because people are now starting to believe him. So, what is the ramification for Q? Most news "hawks" viewed it as negative yesterday. However, by Monday, even those with their heads up the collective butt will understand that this is extremely positive for QCOM. All of the debate over standards is moot once people believe that W-CDMA is a pipe dream. Carriers who are spending billions on new spectrum aren't just going to sit around and watch their cash float away while they wait for W-CDMA. They will act. And they will act fast. CDMA2000 is here right now. If you knew that your other choice was two years away, and that the efficacy of the technology was suspect, would you sit around making huge payments for unused spectrum? Remember, W-CDMA is no more compatible with GSM than CDMA2000 no matter what the rhetoric says. This whole roaming issue is a red herring. Any implementation of a CDMA air interface is going to require dual-mode chips and a complete overlay of GSM base stations. People are starting to believe Dr. Jacobs. That's a good thing.
