I don't know what rock you came out from under...but your perspective is excellent...

>>>Why should the average customer upgrade any time soon. Can we really expect an explosive growth in the early years? What density of base stations is needed to give even a medium date rate and what would operators need to charge per MB transferred to stand a chance to give their investors a decent return on the money?<<<

I have begun to wonder about this kind of thing myself. Visions of G* dance in my head (a lot of us thought anywhere communication was going to really take off...problem was...no market..yet we continued to dream and hope).
I think about the current state of cell coverage now. My Verizon CDMA phone does NOT work along many stretches of US 101, east county San Diego or even in the southern part of the county (at the Tijuana Estuary...and Chula Vista). And talk about web access. Forget it outside my direct service area. I don't even get message notices on my screen if I leave the general area (SD, Orange, LA counties). So I am going to expect 144k 1x speeds on my lap top as I drive to Santa Barbara around when...3 or 4 years from now? Man, these service providers can't even provide what they say they can now.

The problem we have is the market is looking into the NEAR future and doesn't give a damn about 2 years out, much less 6 months. Yeah, the technology is there, but will it be available in the amounts we need to see earnings expansion of the quality we expect?

My surf wax is in the sun and is getting softer by the day.
