Kent:

What are you talking about? The discussion of vaporware is pure nonsense.

1xEV is running in Korea right now. It is also later being deployed in Japan. It will make its debut in the US this year.

WCDMA is being installed in Japan this year. By the end of this year, more trials will be installed in Europe.

You need to stop listening to the crap that people keep saying like, "the king has no clothes." Do you think you are smarter than the folks deploying UMTS systems at VOD? They have spent $50 billion on UMTS licenses around the world. QCOM generates hundreds of millions of dollars every quarter selling licenses for 1xEV and WCDMA. 1xEV and WCDMA are no vaporware.

Since the UMTS spectrum has already been bought and paid for in Europe, operators must NOW decide what they want to for data solutions. The first step is upgrading the GSM to GPRS or 1xEV. QCOM is fighting to have 1xEV integrated into the UMTS systems rather than GPRS. The upside for QCOM is enormous if we can participate in 2.5G upgrades from GSM. QCOM would also stand to benefit from the introduction of 1xEV in 3G UMTS systems. The way I look at it, 2 3G technologies (1xEV and WCDMA) are better than 1 (GPRS and WCDMA).

Meanwhile, NOK wants to sell GPRS equipment for UMTS networks for data. The battle has nothing to do with 1xEV vs. WCDMA - 1XEV & GPRS are only for data. WCDMA is designed for voice, data, video. It handles all of the 3G services in the 5 MHZ spectrum. It's about time QCOM made the obvious comparison between 1xEV and GPRS. BTW, there is nothing specific to UMTS designs that require GPRS over 1XEV as a data backbone. The only requirement is speed for which only 1xEV fulfills the 2 MBPS speed.

1xEV is much more efficient for data. The resources for 1xEV are immense - QCOM has signed over 25 licenses for companies to make 1xEV equipment. How many liceenses have been signed for GPRS? I can't think of one.

No one is scrambling to make WCDMA happen. They are planning the deployment of their $50 billion networks very carefully. The lack of progress for GPRS products has left the door wide open for 1xEV companies to grab market share.

The collapse in NOK and ERICY clearly reflects the new risk for Euro manufacturers. The migration of GSM networks to 2.5G data solutions (GPRS) with no product is losing it luster. Chugging along at 9.6 kbps does not support the killer applications like 2 way video. Better to upgrade directly to a 3G alternatives (1XEV) that have the support of the global CDMA equipment community. The 1xEV networks will support the killer applications that QCOM's chipsets support for video, multimedia, gps, etc...
