Do you think that there is any difference between a religious fanatic and an environmental fanatic,social fanatic or a sexual fanatic? Fanaticism is fanaticism is fanaticism. Don't be so hung up on religious fanaticism. It's no worse than any of the above. The Dark Ages of the Church were no worse than what transpired under Stalin. Huxley pointed out in Brave New World that we would lose our economic and political freedoms but our sexual freedoms would rise so that we could better tolerate our servitude. Personally I don't care to serve a pope or a liberal dictator. I would choose to live as I see fit. There is an alternative to rule by religion or statist despots or whacked out addicts. It is to rule yourself. Go get a book called the "Sovereign Individual". A great read
