You are naive, dear cosmicdude. He puts things into quotes because he wants to create the impression one has said them. On the other hand, maybe you've given him a good out! -- "I didn't know what those little marks meant! I thought they were kind of like, for, you know, emphasis!" No, it would be too embarrassing for even average to say, even if it's true (!), that he didn't know that quotation marks were for quotations.
