READER TIP OF THE WEEK -------------------------------------------
--- Remove Unwanted Programs from Startup (Win2K) ---
Ever wonder how to remove those tray applications that Windows 2000 loads even if you don't use them? Here's how.
1. Open the Registry (Start, Run, type Regedit).
2. Go to My Computer-> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Run
3. Select the program you want removed, right click, and choose Delete.
4. Once removed, Win2000 will no longer load this program at start up.
5. Close Registry Editor and restart Win2000 for the changes to take effect. -- submitted by Jason Riem
--- Secure Your System in Me (WinMe) ---
While you're away from your PC anybody can sniff around your system and see what you're up to or the Web sites you've visited. To prevent this cyber violation from happening, launch Control Panel and open the Power Options applet. Click the Advanced tab, then click the checkbox next to "Prompt for password when computer goes off standby and hibernate." Set the Power Scheme option to Home/Office Desk. The next time your PC goes asleep, you'll need to enter your password to return to work and any intruders will be stymied, for now.
--- Troubleshooting During the Boot (Win9x) ---
If Windows fails to boot properly, reboot and press F8 for the Windows StartUp menu, and pick the Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT) option. It will attempt a normal boot while recording the status of every step Windows takes during the process. Use this option to log a failed boot. Then, reboot to Safe mode if necessary and use a text editor to open BOOTLOG.TXT (in your root directory). Search for "fail" to find the boot steps Windows had trouble with. Failed steps are often excellent clues to the cause of any problems. |
