Earnhardt Jr. Crashes at Dura Lube

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. –– In an eerie reminder of his father's fatal accident, Dale Earnhardt Jr. crashed hard on the first lap of Sunday's rain-delayed Dura Lube 400.

The 26-year-old son of the racing great walked away limping from a car that was badly damaged after hitting the wall at an angle almost identical to that of his father last Sunday on the final lap of the Daytona 500.

"A car went down in front of me, and everybody checked up," Earnhardt said.

Little E got out of the car on his own and walked, limping on his left leg, across the track to the ambulance. He was checked at the infield care center and released.

The elder Earnhardt, a seven-time series champion, was killed in a crash on the final turn a week ago in stock car racing's showcase event.

Dale Earnhardt Sr. was driving about 180 mph when he died instantly. Speeds at North Carolina Speedway are about 30 mph slower than at Daytona.

The 43-car field was still tightly bunched heading into the third turn on the 1.014-mile oval. It appeared Winston Cup rookie Ron Hornaday Jr. bumped the rear of Earnhardt's Chevrolet, sending it into the car driven by Kenny Wallace and then nearly head-on into the concrete wall and igniting a six-car wreck.

Jimmy Spencer, Mike Wallace and Hut Stricklin were also caught in the crash.

The start of the race had been delayed 1 hour, 33 minutes because of rain.
