He published the most provocative section, and invited responses, on the grounds that it was an important issue to discuss, and that the Bell Curve was well- argued. He did not simply endorse it, however. Anyway, there were many responses published in the same issue as the excerpt, and, of course, many letters to the editor thereafter. Some debated respectfully, some were overwrought. In the end, certain writers vowed to boycott TNR, and many subscriptions were lost.
